Rules of Hold’Em

These are the basic rules of how to play Texas Hold’EM or Texas Holdem.

The Shuffle, The Deal and The Blinds.

In the casino version of Texas Hold’em the Dealer does not play. A chip known as the dealer button moves clockwise from player to player to denote which player would be the dealer if the deal was advanced from player to player.

Most Texas hold’em games start with the two players to the left of the dealer button putting a predetermined amount into the pot before the hand is dealt this is called the blinds. The first player to the left of the dealer button puts in half of the blind and the next player to the left puts in the full amount of the blind. This assures that there is some money in the pot to play for.

Each player is dealt two cards face down. These are known as the hole cards.

Betting begins.

A round of betting takes place after the hole cards are dealt. Beginning with the first player to the left of the two that posted the blind. Players can call, raise or fold in turn.

The Flop.

After the first round of betting is complete. The dealer then discards the first card on the top of the deck face down. Then the dealer turns over three cards face up. These cards are known as the flop.

Note: Eventually, a total of five community cards will be placed face up on the table. All players can use the community cards and their hole cards to make the best hand possible.

After the flop another round of betting takes place, beginning with the player to the left of the dealer (the button). During this and all future rounds of betting, players can check, call, raise or fold when it is their turn.

Fourth Street

The dealer burns another card face down then turns the next card face up with the three other community cards. This card is known as Fourth Street or the turn.

The player to the left (the button) then begins another round of betting.

Fifth Street (The River )

After the round of betting is complete the dealer burns another card face down. The dealer then turns up the fifth and final community card. This card which is known as Fifth Street or the River is the final community card.

The fourth round of betting begins with the with the player to the left of the dealer or the button. If the player that had the button has folded their hand the next player to the left is the first to bet or check.

After the final round of betting is complete all  players that are left turn their cards over beginning with the player who made the initial bet or the player that made the last raise shows their cards first.

The Player With The Best Hand Wins.
