Other Games Of Poker
There are many variations of the game of poker. By far the most famous and popular is Texas Hold Em. Here are just a few other games that might interest you.
STUD POKER:
Stud poker has many different variants in which each player is dealt a mix of face-down cards and face-up cards in multiple betting rounds. These games are usually non-positional games, meaning that the player who bets first is the player with the highest card face up. The following are some examples of Stud Poker.
- 7 Card Stud: This game is played by starting off with an ante to the pot from all players. Then each player receives two cards face down (these are called the hole cards). The dealer then deals a card face up to each player. The highest card is the first to bet. After the bet each remaining player receives another card face up then another round of betting. After each player has received four cards face up and the bets have been placed the dealer deals each of the remaining players another card face down and the final round of betting takes place. The hand is won by the player with the best Five Card Hand.
- 5 Card Stud: This game is much like 7 Card Stud only each player only gets one card down or the hole and four cards up. The game is won by highest hand.
- Blind Stud: Any of the stud games can be played this way. All the cards are dealt face down and the player to the left of the dealer turns over a card and then everyone bets this is followed by each player in turn until all the cards are face up. Best of five highest hand wins. This game is also known as roll your own.
- Six Card Stud: Six card stud is played like 7 card stud. The only difference is that instead four cards face up there are only three. It can also be played as 1,4,1 where the first betting round is after only two cards are dealt. Again you use the five best cards to make your hand.
- Follow The Queen: This variant of 7 Card Stud is dealt the same. The only difference is that when a Queen is turned face up the next card is wild and any card in your hand that matches is wild. The wild card can change by round depending on how many Queens are turned face up.
- Baseball: This variant has two different wild cards Threes and Nines. It is dealt the same way seven card stud is dealt. In this game if you get a 4 turned over or down you can buy an extra card for a price. The price is usually set by the dealer of the game. You can only use five cards to make a hand. Night Baseball is the same but all cards are face down.
- Dr Pepper: This variant is where 10′s,2′ and 4′s are wild. The name comes from the original Dr. Pepper ads of the 1920′s: drink a bite to eat at 10,2 and 4 o’clock.
Another Popular Game Is Omaha.
Omaha is another game that has become very popular. It is dealt basically the same as hold’em except that each player is dealt four cards down and can only use two of these cards in their best of five. A total of five community cards are dealt in the center of the table(3-1-1). After each card or cards are dealt each player has the option of checking, betting, raising or folding. The winner is the player with the best five card hand.
The betting for Omaha is as follows: 1. Before each player is dealt four cards down. The player to the immediate left of the button, called (the small blind) is forced to bet half the minimum bet. The player to his left two seats left of the dealer button, called (the big blind) is forced to bet the entire minimum bet. Each player is then dealt four cards. After the deal the player at the left of the big blind is the first to act they must either call the big blind raise or fold. Then each player does the same until it goes around to the small blind which already has half of the minimum bet in the pot they can call, raise or fold the person who is the big blind is the last to act. After this round of betting the dealer then turns up three cards in the center (this is called the flop). Then the betting starts again. After this round it is followed by the dealer turning one card at a time until there are five cards on the table face up. These cards are called fourth street and the river. As with most poker games the high hand wins.
Omaha Hi Low.
This variant of Omaha is dealt and bet the same as Omaha the only difference is that the high and low hands split the pot or there is one player that has the best low hand and the best high hand then this is called souping the pot. The best low hand is as follows A,2,3,4,6. The best high hand is a Royal Flush (see hand rankings for complete list of hand rankings).
